3 Things To Consider When Looking At Used Transmissions

Vehicles have a number of different components that keep them going. Without those components, your vehicle wouldn't be able to get you where you need to go. One of the main components of a vehicle is the transmission. Your transmission is what shifts the gears and allows you to go faster or slower. In the event your transmission starts going out, you might need to look into having it replaced or repaired. For many, replacing their transmission with a used one is ideal. If you are looking at going this route, here are three things to consider when buying a used transmission.

The number of miles on the transmission.

Make sure to ask how many miles the transmission has on it. You don't want to throw a transmission with 200,000 miles on your vehicle and hope it is going to last for years. While it could, that isn't exactly a guarantee. You should try to find the transmission with the lowest amount of miles possible. Try to find one with under 100,000 miles if you can. This can help give you the best possible chance of having your replacement transmission last for a little while at least.

The warranty on the transmission.

Different companies will offer different warranties on used parts. While some might offer you a 90-day warranty, others might only give you 30. It's important that you know what type of warranty you are going to get in the event you do end up with a bad transmission. However, that warranty is only going to cover the component. It isn't going to cover the labor involved in taking the other transmission out and putting a new one in. All of this needs to be factored in when making a decision.

Where the transmission came from.

Ask what happened to the vehicle that had the transmission in it to begin with. You want to make sure that there wasn't some major accident to the front end of the vehicle. Otherwise, you could end up with a transmission that is going to have problems right from the get go. Vehicles that sustain front end damage could end up with problems with components under the hood. The impact and force from the accident can cause the transmission to shift and jar out of place, tweaking the delicate components inside of the component.

By taking the time to go through the three things above, you can make sure you get a good quality transmission for your ride.
